A reader from germany recently (August 21, 1999) said, "I read your fantasic book about amateur radio astronomy, it is a real pleasure with this great source of informations also motivating to do new projects. Thank you for your wonderfull book!!!"

"The book is based to a considerable extent on articles published by Lonc and his students over the years. That occasionally produces some repetition, but it is minor. The book succeeds very well in what the author intended: to show that amateur radio astronomy can be undertaken successfully anywhere, and by non-experts in electronics." David Routledge

David Routledge is a professor of electrical engineering at the University of Alberta. This quote appeared in The Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (October 98, Vol. 92)

A user of radio telescopes at Discovery Park in Safford, Arizona said, "Your book is just great. Lots of interesting ideas and practical. I would love to take your course!"

"...We also thank William Lonc for very helpful advice. He has a book out on undergraduate projects in radio astronomy that we wish we had discovered earlier," said a student from Carroll College.

One student said, "...the book is fantastic and has provided many ideas for me to get started in amateur radio astronomy."

"It's the best thing on amateur radio astronomy I've seen yet," said a professional radio astronomer.

EDITORIAL INFORMATION

Within these pages, the author explores the fascinating world of radioastronomy with a hands-on approach found nowhere else in the literature. The book is the result of years of experimentation and radio telescopeconstruction by the author and his students at Saint Mary's Universityin Halifax, Nova Scotia. Most all of the equipment is constructed frominexpensive surplus materials, placing these projects within financialreach of schools and individuals with very modest budgets. OUR REVIEW

William Lonc is a Catholic priest fascinated by science. Besides hisscholarly achievements, he is well known in the field of amateur radioastronomers. In this book, father Lonc has compiled a great amount ofpreviously published articles where he explains the bases to practiceamateur radio astronomy with the guarantee of carrying out a profitablework for science.

Lonc includes different technical aspects that no doubt will be of agreat help both for those who wish to initiate their way into this newadventure, much less diffused than visual telescope observation, and forthose who already have a solid background on this matter. Thus, hestarts with a general review to all the basic concepts, to next explainhow the instruments must be built, what to observe with them and whatscientific projects are feasible to develop.

The book also includes some research articles written by undergraduatestudents who had reached a certain competence in this field, thusproving what can be done with a will and an interest. Among theobjectives studied there are the galactic center, the Sun, the Moon andthe planets, etc.

Given the virtual absence of similar works to this one with therequired level, available to the aficionados and advanced students, thebook by Lonc is a treasure that mixes practice with theory, experienceand future possibilities."
